Worked example: a 1,900 sq ft footprint at 8/12 pitch is 1,900 x 1.202 = about 2,284 sq ft of roof surface, or roughly 23 squares. If the roof has sections at different pitches, apply each section's multiplier separately and add the results — a single blended multiplier will be wrong.
Two houses with identical footprints can need very different amounts of shingle. At 4/12, the surface is about 5% larger than the footprint; at 12/12 it is more than 41% larger. With the Pythagorean theorem. For a pitch of rise/12, the multiplier equals the square root of 1 plus (rise divided by 12) squared. For a 6/12 pitch: sqrt(1 + (6/12) squared) = sqrt(1.25) = 1.118. This is the ratio of the sloped run to the horizontal run.
1.054. A 4/12 roof has about 5.4% more surface area than its footprint — so a 2,000 sq ft footprint carries roughly 2,108 sq ft of roof surface, or about 21 squares.
1.414 — the square root of 2, because a 12/12 roof rises at exactly 45 degrees. Its surface area is about 41.4% larger than the footprint below it.
