Before You Measure: Understanding Gutter Sizing
The most common mistake contractors make is defaulting to 5" K-style gutters on everything. Sizing needs to match the roof's drainage demand.
Gutter Size Selection
K-Style Gutters:

Measuring Linear Footage
Step 1: Walk the Perimeter
Walk the perimeter of the house and identify:

- Inside corners (require miters)
- Outside corners (require miters)
Step 2: Measure Each Run
Measure each gutter run from end cap to end cap (or corner to corner) with a tape measure at ground level. Verify with any satellite measurement data you have.

- Length of each run
- Location of inside corners
- Location of outside corners
- Proposed downspout locations
Step 3: Calculate Total Linear Footage
Add all individual run lengths. Add 10% for waste and cutting.
Example:
- Front: 42 feet
- Back: 42 feet
- Right side (one slope): 18 feet
- Left side (two slopes): 12 + 14 = 26 feet
- Total: 138 feet
- + 10% waste: 152 feet → Order 155 feet (round up to nearest standard length)
Calculating Slope (Pitch)
Gutters must slope toward downspouts or water will pool, breed mosquitoes, overflow in rain events, and freeze in winter.
Standard slope: 1/4 inch per 10 feet (or 1 inch per 40 feet)
How to determine slope:
For a 40-foot gutter run sloping toward one downspout:
- Required drop: 1 inch
- High end of gutter is 1 inch higher than the downspout end
For longer runs, you can slope toward the center (two downspouts) to minimize total drop:
- 80-foot run with center downspout = two 40-foot runs each dropping 1 inch
- High point in center, two downspouts at ends
- Total drop from center to each end: 1 inch
On long runs (60+ feet), sloping to center and using two downspouts usually produces better aesthetics (less visible slope) and better performance.

How Many Downspouts Do You Need?
Rule of thumb: One downspout per 20-40 linear feet of gutter, or per 600-800 sq ft of roof drainage area.
For a 42-foot front gutter: 2 downspouts (one near each end, or one centered)
For a 42-foot back gutter: 2 downspouts minimum
Adjust based on:

Gutter Sections
Most seamless gutter machines produce continuous lengths—no seams in the field. For sectional gutters, standard sections are 10 feet.
Seamless gutters: Order total linear footage + 10% (for cuts at outlets, end caps, miters).
Sectional gutters: Round up to next 10 feet increment per run, then add sections for waste.
End Caps
- Left end cap per gutter run beginning (without outside miter)
- Right end cap per gutter run ending (without outside miter)
- Count end caps on all runs: typically 2 per straight run
Outlets / Tube Outlets
One per planned downspout location. Count total downspouts = count of outlets.
Miters
Inside miter: Where two gutter runs meet at an inside corner.
Outside miter: Where two gutter runs meet at an outside corner.
Count each corner on your walkthrough. Inside miters are more common on complex rooflines.
Hangers
K-style hidden hangers: One every 24 inches is standard. Reduce to 18 inches in heavy snow/ice areas.
Formula: Linear feet × 0.5 hangers per foot (every 24 inches)
- For 150 linear feet: 150 × 0.5 = 75 hangers (round up to 80 for waste)
For snow regions: Linear feet × 0.67 = hangers every 18 inches
Downspout Lengths
Measure from outlet to bottom of fascia + distance to ground outlet or elbow point.
A typical two-story downspout run: 14-18 feet. Single story: 8-12 feet.
Add elbows: typically 2 per downspout (one at top, one at bottom). More if routing around obstacles.
Sealant
Gutter sealant is critical at every joint, outlet, and miter.
Typical usage: one tube per 30-40 linear feet of gutter.
